Survey Training

Over the course of the last three years I have learned, performed and taught several types of marine survey techniques for various NGOs. During my first contract we were performing quadrat surveys for the Seychelles Department for Environment looking for signs of juvenile coral recruitment after the mass bleaching effect back in '99. I have then gone on to learn marine protected area(MPA) habitat survey techniques using 50m line transects and belt transects looking for particular target indicator species and keystone species, monitoring if the MPA was having a positive effect on the reef ecosystem. During this training we were also performing more in depth Baseline surveys which ran from deep to shallow in 10m transects, these were aiming to record every bit of living biota to be used with GIS mapping. Reef check was my next stop for furthering my experience and I am now a Reef Check Ecodiver trainer. The last survey method I have been trained in is the Fijian Locally managed marine areas (FLMMA) level 2 underwater visual survey and the catch per unit effort(CPUE) which combined together is used to monitor landed fish catches and the fish population structure on a given reef.
