Since returning to the Uk from my science positions abroad I could not not dive and being in Falmouth I was located near some of the best diving in the Uk.

I have found it extremely different operating my underwater housing through gloves and in different equipment than I am used to but these are a few shots to date of what I have seen.

I was in the Bahamas for just under a year working as Chief Scientist first and then Expedition Leader on top of that on a Marine Conservation project. We were located on the tongue of the ocean, to over two kilometres depth, and the second longest barrier reef in the western hemisphere.

These are a few shots from surveys we were doing just for ID checks and sometimes for biomas etimations also. These range from fish to invertebrates, mobile and sessile in nature.

I was the Science Officer for Coral Cay in Napantao, Southern Leyte again working on a marine reserve and conducting biomass surveys in the unique Sogod Bay. Unique because of it's extreme depth and narrow width producing huge currents and high levels of biodiversity.

I was was not well equipped with a good point and shoot at this point but it was enough for identification purposes and recording some of the amazing marine life that I encountered there.

Working from a remote island off of Venua Levu in the Namena marine reserve was a great opportunity to get some photos of a thriving marine ecosystem.

With visibiity up up to 60m we found all sorts of marine life, from mega sized manta rays and spotted eagle rays right down to nudibranchs, this was some of the best diving I have ever experiences.

Underwater ID photography

Through a lot of my surveying work I have often come across animals that are unique, a new colourmorph or hybrid perhaps, and so I got into the habbit of bringing my camera along incase of such an occurence. I have been using a point and shoot cannon s100 since Fiji which is easy to handle and clip on during a survey, I'm not looking for a career in underwater photography so this powerful little compact does a great job.
